Teaching Chinese Characters to kids thru Rubber Stamps
While teaching rubber stamping to children enrolled in the elementary schools after school program a few years ago I took some of the more common Chinese characters I had made into stamps and used them into a lesson I used Sun, Moon, Big, Man , Stop and 5 other fairly common symbols made a list of them stamped and had the kids stamp them and learn what each was the next week when I came back to teach another class found that not only had the kids learned the symbols but the teachers had put the lessons up on the walls for the other kids who were not in the program to learn from and the teachers had also learned them. This goes to show that simply by putting these out for the kids to stamp and learn in a way that was fun , they learned and wanted more. Found out the characters I had thought might not fit well into a school setting were the ones the kids were most likely to want ( especially the boys liked the war character) this was not ment to teach them chinese as much as to open their minds up to know that the characters do have a meaning and to wonder what they were! these children were in the grades 3-6 mostly, a wonderful curious age |
